French Open 2026: Sabalenka Chasing First Roland Garros Crown as Zverev, Italians Eye History

The French Open is entering its final stretch, and for the first time in years, both the men's and women's draws feel completely wide open.

With several big names already out of the tournament, world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and second seed Alexander Zverev have emerged as the leading contenders for their maiden Roland Garros titles. But standing in their way are a host of breakthrough stars, surprise packages and history-making challengers.

Sabalenka's Best Chance Yet in Paris

Few players have benefited more from the tournament's unpredictability than Aryna Sabalenka.

The Belarusian entered Roland Garros as one of the favourites, but the exits of defending champion Coco Gauff, former champion Iga Swiatek and several other top seeds have only strengthened her position.

Sabalenka now finds herself as one of only two remaining top-10 seeds in the women's draw and arguably the strongest favourite left standing.

The world No. 1 will face Russia's Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals as she continues her quest for a first French Open title.

Having reached the final last year, Sabalenka is now just two wins away from another championship match and a seventh consecutive Grand Slam semi-final.

However, Shnaider has quietly put together an impressive run of her own and will be aiming to reach the first major semi-final of her career.

The Cinderella Story of Roland Garros

While Sabalenka remains the headline act, Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska has become one of the stories of the tournament.

Ranked outside the world's top 100, Chwalinska has produced a stunning run to the quarter-finals, defeating Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, 23rd seed Elise Mertens and former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari along the way.

She now takes on Anna Kalinskaya for a place in the semi-finals.

Should Chwalinska continue her remarkable run, she could become one of the lowest-ranked players to reach a French Open final in recent memory.

Zverev Still Searching for Grand Slam Glory

On the men's side, Alexander Zverev continues to move quietly but confidently through the draw.

The German defeated Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar to reach his fifth French Open semi-final in the last six years and remains firmly in contention for the biggest title missing from his resume.

Despite multiple deep runs at Roland Garros, Zverev is still chasing his maiden Grand Slam trophy.

This year's draw may present one of his best opportunities yet.

Jakub Mensik Announces Himself

If there has been one breakout star in the men's draw, it is Jakub Mensik.

The 20-year-old Czech defeated Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca in straight sets to reach the first Grand Slam semi-final of his career.

Already regarded as one of tennis' brightest young talents, Mensik has now become the first male player born in 2004 or later to reach a Grand Slam semi-final.

His reward is a blockbuster showdown against Zverev, with a place in the French Open final at stake.

Italy's Historic Roland Garros Run

Perhaps the most remarkable storyline unfolding in Paris belongs to Italy.

Despite the shock early exit of world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, Italian tennis is enjoying one of its greatest Grand Slam tournaments ever.

For the first time in the Open Era, three Italian men have reached the French Open quarter-finals.

Flavio Cobolli 10

Even more remarkably, Berrettini and Arnaldi will face each other in an all-Italian quarter-final, guaranteeing Italy at least one men's semi-finalist.

Meanwhile, Cobolli faces fourth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime as he attempts to extend his dream run.

New Champions on the Horizon

One thing is already certain: Roland Garros 2026 is shaping up to produce new stories and potentially new champions.

Sabalenka is chasing her first title in Paris. Zverev is still searching for his maiden Grand Slam. Mensik is attempting to complete a breakthrough run, while Italy's trio of quarter-finalists are rewriting their nation's tennis history.

With the tournament now entering its decisive phase, the race for the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen and the Musketeers' Trophy has never looked more unpredictable.
