French Open: Fonseca continues dream Roland-Garros run with victory over Ruud

Joao Fonseca advanced to his first grand slam quarter-final after backing up his victory over Novak Djokovic with a thrilling four-set success over Casper Ruud on Sunday.

Having prolonged Djokovic's wait for a record-breaking 25th major title in round three, Brazil's teenage sensation dumped two-time Roland-Garros finalist Ruud out in round four, triumphing 7-5 7-6 (10-8) 5-7 6-2.

French Open Fonseca continues dream Roland-Garros run with victory over Ruud

Fonseca and Ruud entertained the evening crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier for almost four hours, and a 54-minute opening set was nothing compared to what followed.

The only break of the opener went Fonseca's way in the 12th game, with Ruud only able to punch the 19-year-old's return into the net on his second set point.

The second set featured a rapid exchange of breaks then stayed on serve all the way, with both players digging out prolonged holds as a tie-break was required.

And, after Ruud squandered three set points and Fonseca was denied by an incorrect call at the baseline, the Brazilian thundered a cross-court forehand out of his opponent's reach to claim a one-hour, 24-minute second set.

The third was another hard-fought battle, but on that occasion, it was Ruud that came out on top after registering a late break to avoid another tie-break.

But Fonseca was not to be outdone, coming roaring back in the fourth set with breaks in games one and five as his powerful forehand winners gave Ruud no chance.

A brilliant backhand lob teed up a crucial hold in game six, and the next time the ball was in his hand, he was able to serve it out to love.

Fonseca will face another first-time major quarter-finalist, Jakub Mensik, next. He held off a stirring fightback from Andrey Rublev to win 6-3 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 2-6 6-3.

Data Debrief: Fonseca breaks new ground

Fonseca is the youngest Brazilian to reach the last eight of any grand slam in the Open Era, while he is the first of his countrymen to achieve that feat overall since Gustavo Kuerten in 2004, also at Roland-Garros.

Furthermore, he is only the third South American teenager to reach a men's singles quarter-final at a grand slam, after Guillermo Perez Roldan (Roland-Garros 1988) and Juan Martin del Potro (US Open 2008).

And he has had to do things the hard way, too, becoming just the third teenager to claim multiple ATP top-20 victories en route to a French Open quarter-final, after Jannik Sinner in 2020 and Holger Rune in 2022.
