Coco Gauff Stunned By Diana Shnaider In Early Canadian Open Exit

Following Olympic disappointment, Coco Gauff faced an early exit at the Canadian Open, defeated by Diana Shnaider. This loss marked a significant career milestone for Shnaider, achieving her first top-10 win and advancing to the quarter-finals of an ATP 1000 event.

Coco Gauff experienced another setback following her Olympic disappointment, exiting early from the Canadian Open in Toronto. The world number two faced an unexpected defeat by Diana Shnaider, who triumphed 6-4, 6-1. This marked Shnaider's first top-10 victory and secured her a spot in the quarter-finals of an ATP 1000 event.

Gauff had previously been eliminated early at the Paris Olympics, falling in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. Reflecting on her performance, she said, "Sometimes I question like whether I should have played or not. But at the end of the day I wanted to test myself and see if I would be able to, how I would do being mentally tired a little bit and physically fatigued."

Gauff's Shock Exit at Canadian Open

Diana Shnaider has had a remarkable year with a 39-14 record across all professional matches. She has won three titles: Hua Hin (hard) in February, Bad Homburg (grass) in June, and Budapest (clay) in July. Her victory over Gauff was a significant milestone.

Shnaider expressed her admiration for Gauff's physical preparedness and court coverage. "I know Coco is very physically prepared for everyone on tour," she said. "So when there were long rallies and I was winning them I was like, 'Wow, I just beat Coco in long rallies. I am good'. I mean, I tried to play it cool, but inside I was like, 'Yes! I made it!'"

Third seed Aryna Sabalenka had a straightforward win against British number one Katie Boulter with a 6-3, 6-3 scoreline. Sabalenka will next face Amanda Anisimova in the quarter-finals.

Sabalenka has been consistent since the start of 2020, reaching 17 WTA 1000 quarter-finals. This achievement is matched only by world number one Iga Swiatek during this period.

American Presence in Quarter-Finals

The Canadian Open quarter-finals feature five American players: defending champion Jessica Pegula, Peyton Stearns, Emma Navarro, Taylor Townsend, and Amanda Anisimova.

This strong American presence highlights the depth of talent within US women's tennis currently competing at high levels internationally.

Despite her recent struggles on court, Gauff remains optimistic about future tournaments. She acknowledged her mental and physical fatigue but emphasised her desire to compete better even when expectations are low.
