Coco Gauff staged a remarkable comeback in the US Open third round, overcoming Elina Svitolina to keep her title defence alive. The American tennis star adjusted her strategy to secure a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Ukrainian in just over two hours on Friday.
The match began evenly as both players tried to gauge each other’s strengths. Svitolina took the lead by winning the final three games of the first set. Despite defending three break points in the opening set, Svitolina couldn't sustain her momentum. Gauff found her rhythm and broke Svitolina's serve in the sixth game of the second set, pushing the match into a decider.

In the third set, Gauff started strong but struggled to convert three match points in the penultimate game. She eventually clinched victory with another break in the following game. This win marked Gauff's 60th triumph at Grand Slam events.
Gauff's hard-fought victory made her the youngest player to win more than ten consecutive women’s singles matches at the US Open since Serena Williams achieved 11 wins between 1999 and 2000. Additionally, she now shares the record for most US Open wins in women’s singles before turning 21 with Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams, each having 17 wins.
Gauff has consistently reached the fourth round in every Grand Slam this year. This makes her only the second player under 21 to achieve this feat in the last decade, following Iga Swiatek.
After this significant win, Gauff will face either Emma Navarro or Marta Kostyuk in the next round.
