Holger Rune downs Daniil Medvedev to reach Indian Wells final

By Patric Ridge

Holger Rune defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets to reach the final of the Indian Wells Open. After a tightly contested first set, which lasted over an hour, Rune maintained the momentum to get an early break in the second before going on to seal a 7-5 6-4 victory.

The win ended the Dane's seven-match losing streak in Tour-level semi-finals and propelled him into his first final at Indian Wells. He served out the victory in style, with a blistering effort forcing Medvedev into an awkward return, paving the way for Rune to strike a forehand winner down the centre of the court.

Medvedev was bidding to reach the Indian Wells final for a third straight season. Rune will take on either Jack Draper or Carlos Alcaraz for the title, meaning it will be the first ATP Masters 1000 or grand slam final to be contested between two players born in the 21st century.

Data Debrief: Rune awakening

Rune has now reached four ATP 1000 finals, though this is the first time the 21-year-old has reached a showpiece match at any level since the Brisbane Open in January of last year.

His victory was his 150th on the Tour, but after seeing off world number nine Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round and now number six Medvedev, the youngster has recorded multiple top-10 wins at a tournament for the first time.

Since the event's inauguration in 1976, Rune is the first Danish player to reach the men's singles final at Indian Wells.
