India defeat Uzebkistan in Davis Cup tie

{image-bopanna and bhupathi_09022008.jpg news.oneindia.in}New Delhi, Feb 9: After a mixed opening day at the Davis Cup, the Indian pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna dominated the proceedings on Saturday in the nation's capital New Delhi, to win the doubles rubber. The match was played at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association courts.


The Indian pairing beat the Uzbekistan duo of Farookh Dustov&Denis Istomin in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. With this win India have taken a vital 2-1 lead in the 5-match tie. However, India has to win one more match to keep their hopes alive in the tournamet as a defeat to Uzbekistan would mean relegation. Earlier Bopanna's victory over Farrukh gave India's Davis Cup campaign a perfect start before Istomin spoiled Somdev Varman's debut to draw Uzbekistan level on the opening day of the Asia/ Oceania Zone group I tie on Friday.
