India and Pakistan will lock horns in Group 1 playoff fixture of the Davis Cup 2024 during the weekend. The tie is slated on February 3 and 4 on the grass courts of the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad.

The Indian tennis team returns to Pakistan soil after six decades. The last time India visited the neighbouring country for a Davis Cup game was in 1964 for a Zone B match in Lahore, wherein the visitors won 4-0.

The upcoming clash between India and Pakistan will be a breath of fresh air for the sport in the host nation, which has struggled to host major international events in the last decade and a half.

For the uninitiated, the Davis Cup is a men’s team event hosted annually by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). It is known as the World Cup of Tennis and is held in three stages in February, September, and November. India and Pakistan are currently contesting in the Qualifiers (World Group 1 playoffs) with the winner to progress to the World Cup Group I tie in September, while the loser will play in the World Cup Group II tie in September.

A total of 72 nations will take part in the Davis Cup 2024 Qualifiers and World Group I and II playoffs, as mentioned on the official website of the organisers. There will be 24 nations competing in the Qualifiers for a place in the Davis Cup 2024 Finals. Similarly, 24 nations will contest in World Group I and II playoffs. The 12 winners from each World Group will play in World Group I and World Group II, respectively, between September 10 and 15.

How is a Davis Cup match played?

The Davis Cup matches are split into the duration of two days. On day one, the home nation’s No.1 player will take on the No.2 player of the visiting player and vice versa. Only two singles matches are played on the first day.

The second day starts with the only doubles clash of the tie followed by the remaining two singles matches. The home nation’s No.1 player will compete with the visiting nation’s No.1 player and vice versa. All the live matches are played with best-of-3 tiebreak sets.

The two rivals played in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania tie in Kazakhstan after the match was moved from Pakistan because of the All India Tennis Association’s (AITA) demand to stage it at a neutral venue. India defeated a depleted Pakistan 3-0 with Sumit Nagal winning two singles matches and veteran Leander Paes paired with Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan to win the doubles in the second round.
