India vs Pakistan Davis Cup Clash: Historic Tennis Showdown In Islamabad

By Subhashish Sarkar

Another high-octane India vs Pakistan showdown is on the horizon, but this time, it's not on the cricket pitch; it's on the tennis court. After six decades, an Indian tennis team has gone to Pakistan for a Davis Cup match.

The Davis Cup squad, consisting of five players, support staff, and coaches, arrived in Islamabad for the World Group 1 playoff tie happening on February 3-4. The ties will happen on the grass courts of the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad.

It's the first time since 1964 that the Indian Davis Cup team is going to Pakistan. The last time India played against Pakistan at a neutral place was in 2019 and India won 4-0. Rohit Rajpal, a former player, leads the Indian Davis Cup team as the non-playing captain, and Zeeshan Ali is the coach.

Headache for Rohit and Zeeshan

This time, Rohit and Zeeshan have a tough job replacing Rohan Bopanna, who retired from Davis Cup last year in Lucknow. Bopanna, who recently became the oldest No. 1 in tennis history by winning the Australian Open Men's doubles with Matthew Ebden, will be greatly missed.

Not having Bopanna is a big setback, and it gets tougher with Sumit Nagal, India's top men's singles player at world No. 121, and Sasikumar Mukund also not available. Nagal won't be part of the team heading to Pakistan, and Mukund decided not to join due to personal reasons.

Onus on Asian Games medallist pair

With Bopanna and Nagal not available, the responsibility falls on the shoulders of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni, who won the silver medal in the Asian Games 2023 doubles event, to lead India's charge.

Joining them are Yuki Bhambri, who has been doing well since returning from a long injury break last year, along with N Sriram Balaji and Niki Poonacha. A total of 24 national teams will compete in World Group I play-offs. The 12 winners will progress to World Group I while the losers will drop to World Group II.

In a Davis Cup match, there are five games: four singles and one doubles. To win the match, a team needs to win at least three of these games. The Indian tennis team did their best in the Davis Cup in 1966, 1974, and 1987, when they ended up as the second-best team.
