India and Pakistan are facing off in the Davis Cup 2024 Group 1 Playoffs. The match is taking place at the Pakistan Sports Complex's grass courts in Islamabad on February 3 and 4.
After sixty years, the Indian tennis team makes a comeback to Pakistani land. India's last Davis Cup match against the neighbouring nation was a Zone B match in Lahore in 1964, in which the visitors won 4-0.
After struggling to host significant international events for the past fifteen years, the forthcoming match between India and Pakistan will be a breath of fresh air for the host nation's sport.
For those who don't know, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) hosts the Davis Cup, an annual men's team competition. Known as the World Cup of Tennis, it takes place in three phases in November, September, and February.
Right now, India and Pakistan are competing in the World Group 1 playoffs known as the Qualifiers. The winner will go on to the World Cup Group I tie in September, while the loser will compete in the World Cup Group II tie in the same month.
There are two days dedicated to the Davis Cup matches. The top player from the home country will face the top player from the visiting team on the first day of play, and vice versa. On the first day, there are just two singles matches contested.
The tie's sole doubles match begins the second day, which is then devoted to the last two singles matches. The top player from the host country will face the top player from the visiting country, and vice versa. Best-of-three tiebreak sets are used for all live matches.
