Davis Cup: India Beat Pakistan 3-0 To Qualify For World Group I Stages

India vs Pakistan Davis Cup 2024: India made their way into the Davis Cup World Group I in an emphatic fashion on Sunday (February 4) as the national team defeated Pakistan early 3-0 in a five-legged tie in Islamabad.

After winning the two singles yesterday, Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni defeated Muzammil Murtaza and Aqeel Khan 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) in the only doubles match in the tie. India sealed the Davis Cup victory with two singles matches left to play.

Bhambri and Myneni dominated the Pakistan duo in the first set as they started the match by breaking the serve in the opening game. The Indian pair never allowed their rivals to settle down in the first set and broke them further twice to win 6-2.

The second set was a more even affair as Khan and Murtaza held on to their serve well while the Indian pair remained bullish with their approach. The Pakistan duo averted trouble midway through the second set while serving to level the scoreline at 2-3.

Bhambri/Myneni moved to break point by quickly killing points but the Pakistan duo reacted well and soon took advantage before sealing the game. The see-saw battle resumed from that point on, taking the set into the tiebreaker at 6-6. It remained an even affair in the tie-breaker with the Pakistani pair taking a slender lead at 5-4. However, the Myneni and Bhambri picked the three points on the go to seal the win.

Earlier on Day 1, Ramkumar Ramanathan defeated Pakistan's No.1 player Aisham-Ul-Haq Qureshi over three sets 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/4), 6-0 before N Sriram Balaji gave India 2-0 lead by defeating Aqeel Khan 7-5, 6-3. The three back-to-back wins meant the remaining two singles in the best-of-five tie became inconsequential and were not played.
