Indian Tennis Team Achieves Victory In Billie Jean King Cup

Pune, April 10: The Indian tennis team continued its impressive run in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group 1, achieving a vital 2-1 victory over Hong Kong, China. This win is a significant step as the team looks to cement a place in the playoff stage.

The event, held at the Mahalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex, saw India gaining crucial points, sponsored by entities including Suhana and supported by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) alongside the Ministry of Sports and Youth Welfare of Maharashtra. Partners like Bisleri, Shiv-Naresh, Manipal Hospitals, Eco Factory Foundation, and Dunlop have also backed the tournament, with live coverage on DD Sports.

The kickoff match for India on the third day saw Vaidehi Chaudhari, showcasing remarkable skill and tenacity against Ho Ching Wu from Hong Kong, China. The encounter, marking Chaudhari's debut in this tournament, stretched over two hours, culminating in a 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 victory for India. Chaudhari's resilience in the tiebreak of the first set and her dominance in the subsequent set provided India with an early lead in the tie.

Following Chaudhari's win, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty faced off against Hong Yi Cody Wong in a marathon match lasting over two hours. Bhamidipaty, continuing her stellar performance in the tournament, clinched the match 7-6, 2-6, 6-3, marking her third consecutive win. With eight aces to her credit, Bhamidipaty's victory ensured India's lead extended to 2-0 against Hong Kong, China.

However, the doubles match saw Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare in a challenging battle against Eudice Chong and Hong Yi Cody Wong. Despite securing the first set, the Indian duo couldn't maintain their momentum, ultimately conceding the match at 7-6, 3-6, 11-13.

The Indian team is scheduled to face Chinese Taipei in their next match, aiming to continue their winning streak in the tournament. This engagement is crucial for advancing further and securing a stronger position in the playoffs.

The tournament also featured other notable matches. Thailand triumphed over Korea Republic with a 2-1 score.
