“It Was Surreal”: Shrivalli Bhamidipaty Shines Bright on India Debut at Billie Jean King Cup

Hyderabad's rising tennis star Shrivalli Bhamidipaty made an unforgettable debut for Team India at the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group 1, setting the tone for the campaign with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win over New Zealand's Aishi Das.

The 23-year-old's clinical performance at the Mhalunge Balewadi Tennis Complex in Pune gave India a perfect start to their Group 1 outing, in a tournament being hosted by MSLTA in collaboration with AITA and PMDTA.

Currently ranked 345 in the WTA singles standings, Shrivalli displayed maturity beyond her years, showing no signs of nerves in her first outing in national colours. While the scoreboard suggested a straightforward win, the moment carried immense emotional weight for the youngster.

"It was really emotional playing my debut match for the country. I was a little emotional on court but then I think I handled myself well. The team and the captain helped me a lot in that by cheering, and the crowd also backed us for every point. I think that's what helped me pull through the match today," Shrivalli reflected after the match.

In front of a spirited home crowd, Shrivalli kept her composure throughout and credited her mindset for helping her stay focused.

"I was just trying to focus on every point that I play and just try to give my best in every point, while just thinking of the country," she added.

The post-match emotions were equally intense as Shrivalli described the joy of celebrating with her teammates after the win.

"The feeling when I hugged my teammates after the win was surreal. All of us being individual players, we've come to play as a team and the amount that we've bonded in the past week, that has been really good and really exciting for all of us, and I've really loved the atmosphere here."

Team India, which features seasoned campaigners like Ankita Raina and Prarthana Thombare alongside promising youngsters such as Maaya Rajeshwaran, has struck a healthy balance of experience and youthful energy. Shrivalli spoke about how the camaraderie within the squad has been a major factor in helping her settle into the team environment.

"We've been doing a lot of crazy stuff off court, playing a lot of games and trying to understand each other. I think we've got a good blend of how everyone functions on the team, and we've been trying to be really chirpy, and I think that's what helped us."

She also acknowledged the crucial role of the senior players in mentoring the younger ones and fostering a supportive atmosphere.

"The seniors have been really helpful to us. They have been giving us insights of how they have been playing for the country in the past few years. They've been telling us what we have to do. They've also been trying to keep us calm before the matches and that's been really helpful. Also, Maaya being on the team adds an extra boost to us."

India may also find an advantage in the familiar playing conditions at home, something Shrivalli feels the team is making the most of.

"The courts have been in our favour because they've been slightly faster and bouncier. I think all of us love playing on courts like these. Also, with the conditions being really hot, I think it helps us."

As India sets its sights on progressing through the group stage, Shrivalli's sensational debut not only lifts the team's morale but also signals the emergence of another promising talent in Indian women's tennis. With belief, composure, and an infectious team spirit, Shrivalli and her teammates are ready to make their mark on the continental stage.
