Jannik Sinner's Australian Open Triumph Sparks Comparisons to Novak Djokovic's Playing Style

Jannik Sinner's recent triumph at the Australian Open, marking his second consecutive win there and third Grand Slam title overall, has drawn significant attention.

Alexander Zverev, who finished as runner-up, compared Sinner's style to that of Novak Djokovic, a 24-time major champion. Zverev noted that facing Sinner on hard courts felt akin to the challenge posed by Djokovic.

Sinner s Win at Australian Open Compared to Djokovic

Comparisons to Djokovic

Zverev highlighted how Sinner's game mirrors Djokovic's peak performance. "He's very, very similar to Novak when he was at his best. They barely miss. Like, barely miss. They make you think like you have to overhit all the time to have a chance in a rally against them," Zverev remarked after his loss to Sinner with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 at Melbourne Park.

Sinner's relentless court coverage and ability to transition from defense to offense quickly are reminiscent of Djokovic. His serve was strong enough to avoid break points against Zverev, making him a formidable opponent. These similarities are not accidental; Sinner has modeled his game after Djokovic.

Continuous Improvement

Sinner's rapid improvement over recent years is evident in his rise to the top of the rankings last June. He boasts an impressive record of 80 wins and six losses with nine titles since the start of last season. His progress has made him a player no one wants to face.

Zverev, who had a 4-2 record against Sinner before their latest match, acknowledged the Italian's growth. "He serves better. He returns better. He hits his forehand better. He hits his backhand better. He moves better. He volleys better," Zverev said, noting how challenging it is now to compete against Sinner.

Future Challenges

Sinner's next challenge is improving on clay and grass surfaces, particularly for the French Open and Wimbledon. Before Roland Garros in May, he faces a hearing in April regarding a World Anti-Doping Agency appeal related to a doping case where he was cleared.

Despite this looming issue, Sinner remains focused on his game. "At the moment, I'm not thinking about this," he said, acknowledging occasional concerns but prioritising his tennis development.

Coaching and Development

Sinner works closely with coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill to enhance his skills continually. Vagnozzi commented on Sinner's dedication: "He's still young... but for sure, he is a guy that tries to improve every day — going on court, in practice."

Vagnozzi believes Sinner can reach the highest level of tennis, mentioning legends like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal as benchmarks for success.
