Jannik Sinner has been cleared after testing positive for a banned substance twice in March. The world number one tested positive for low levels of a clostebol metabolite, a steroid that can enhance muscle mass, during Indian Wells. Sinner was informed of the positive tests in April and initially faced a provisional suspension. However, he successfully contested it and continued playing.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) discovered that Sinner was inadvertently contaminated by his physiotherapist. The physiotherapist had used an over-the-counter spray containing the substance on a cut on his own hand before treating Sinner. The ITIA accepted this explanation, concluding that the contamination was unintentional. An independent tribunal cleared the 23-year-old of all fault or negligence last week.

Sinner will lose the ranking points he earned at Indian Wells, where he lost in the semi-finals to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. "I will now put this challenging and deeply unfortunate period behind me," Sinner said in his statement. "I will continue to do everything I can to ensure I comply with the ITIA's anti-doping programme, and I have a team around me that are meticulous in their own compliance."

The ATP commended the ITIA for their thorough investigation into the Cincinnati Open winner's case. "We are encouraged that no fault or negligence has been found on Jannik Sinner's part," the ATP posted on X. "We would also like to acknowledge the robustness of the investigation process and independent evaluation of the facts under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP), which has allowed him to continue competing."
This incident highlights the importance of players and their teams exercising extreme caution when using products or treatments. Integrity remains crucial in tennis.
Sinner is set to compete next at the US Open, starting on August 26 in New York.
