Doping Probe Takes Toll On Tennis Star Jannik Sinner, According To Coach

Jannik Sinner, the world number one, has been significantly impacted both physically and mentally by an investigation into his positive tests for a banned substance, according to his coach Darren Cahill.

In March, Sinner tested positive twice for clostebol, a substance that can enhance muscle mass. However, an independent tribunal recently concluded that he was unknowingly given the substance through an over-the-counter spray by his physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi.

Sinner has managed to secure ATP-level titles in Halle and Cincinnati since the positive tests. Despite this, he was knocked out at the semi-final stage of the French Open and only reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

He also missed the Paris Olympic Games due to tonsillitis. Cahill believes these setbacks are linked to the ongoing investigation. "I guess if you are not a Jannik fan, you may not see too much difference in what he has been doing the last few months because he has still been playing quite well," Cahill told ESPN.

Cahill noted that fans of Sinner would have observed changes in his body language and physicality on the court. "He's struggled and I think it's worn him down physically and mentally," Cahill added. The tonsillitis diagnosis, which led to Sinner missing the Olympics, is seen as part of this broader struggle.

Some critics have voiced their disapproval of the decision to clear Sinner of any wrongdoing. Nick Kyrgios, who was a runner-up at Wimbledon in 2022, expressed his frustration on X (formerly Twitter), calling it ridiculous that Sinner avoided a ban. Kyrgios argued that Sinner deserved a two-year suspension for testing positive twice for a banned steroid.

Denis Shapovalov, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, also questioned the decision, suggesting it was inconsistent with other players' bans for similar infractions. Despite these criticisms, Cahill remains firm in his belief that Sinner would never intentionally take a banned substance. "I just want to stress that he's maybe the most professional young man that I have ever had the chance to work with," Cahill said.

Cahill emphasized Sinner's professionalism and integrity: "He would never ever intentionally do anything, and he's in a situation that is incredibly unfortunate." This sentiment underscores the complexity of Sinner's case and highlights how inadvertent actions can lead to significant consequences.
