Jannik Sinner splits up with trainer and physiotherapist after doping test saga

By Mohamed Farzan

World No.1 Jannik Sinner has parted ways with his trainer Umberto Ferrera and physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi. The Italian tennis star made the decision after the controversy he was involved in regarding his recent doping saga. Back in March, Sinner was tested positive for a banned substance named Clostebol, which is derived from testosterone.

But later, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) investigated and found that Sinner was not involved in any wrongdoing or any act of negligence. Sinner was contaminated after being treated by his physiotherapist, who had earlier used a product, unknowingly, with Clostebol in it.

After being found not guilty, Sinner dropped a statement where he acknowledged the laws that are in place to maintain the integrity of the sport.

The ITIA's decision did not go down well with other tennis stars, including Denis Shapovalov and 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios, who both reckoned that Sinner was lucky to get away.

"Ridiculous - whether it was accidental or planned. You get tested twice with a banned (steroid) substance... you should be gone for 2 years. Your performance was enhanced. Massage cream... Yeah nice," Kyrgios wrote.

Jannik Sinner set for US Open

Sinner is now set to take part in the US Open, a tournament he is yet to win. The youngster did not participate in the Paris Olympics due to tonsillitis. He returned in the Canadian Open but failed to advance to the semis after Andrey Rublev defeated him in the semi-finals.

He, however, made a strong comeback by winning the Cincinnati Masters where he beat USA's Frances Tiafoe in the final. Last year, Sinner won the Australian Open men's singles title after beating Daniil Medvedev in a thrilling three-setter. Thereafter, he was crowned as the World No.1 during the French Open after Novak Djokovic pulled out of the clay-court major due to a knee injury.
