Jessica Pegula Celebrates Second Consecutive Canadian Open Victory

Jessica Pegula defended her Canadian Open title in Toronto, marking her second consecutive win. She became the seventh player in the Open Era to defend her title at this event, and the first woman to win 10 straight singles matches at the Canadian Open since Serena Williams.

Jessica Pegula celebrated a significant victory at the Canadian Open in Toronto, overcoming Amanda Anisimova in the final. This win marked Pegula's second consecutive Canadian Open title, as she triumphed 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. The 30-year-old, seeded third, became only the seventh player in the Open Era to defend her Canadian Open title, following Martina Hingis in 2000.

Pegula expressed her joy about winning in Toronto, especially with family and friends present. "Toronto is close to Buffalo; I had many friends and family here. My grandparents and husband were able to come today," said Pegula. "Winning the tournament and sharing that moment with them is really special."

Pegula Wins Canadian Open Again

The victory also made Pegula the first woman since Serena Williams to win 10 consecutive singles matches at the Canadian Open. Williams had achieved 14 straight wins between 2011 and 2014. "I know everyone's talking about my record, but it's nice to get through the week and back it up," Pegula remarked. "So, just super excited, I mean, an honour, really."

It took Pegula one hour and 27 minutes to secure her sixth WTA singles title. This victory also marked her third career WTA 1000 title after Guadalajara in 2022 and Montreal in 2023.

Amanda Anisimova reached her first Tour-level final in over two years by defeating four top-20 players along the way. Reflecting on her journey, Anisimova said, "I put the work in, kept my head down, and tried to come back to the sport with a more relaxed feeling." She added that enjoying each day without being too serious has helped her significantly.

Pegula's success at the Canadian Open adds another milestone to her career. She has now become the first player to defend a WTA-1000 title since Iga Swiatek (Rome 2021 and 2022) and the first on hard court since Ashleigh Barty (Miami 2019 and 2021).

Pegula's performance was particularly meaningful due to its proximity to Buffalo, allowing many of her loved ones to attend. She noted that having such support at tournaments is rare for her.

This achievement underscores Pegula's growing prominence in women's tennis. Her ability to maintain high performance levels consistently has set her apart from many of her peers.

The Canadian Open win not only adds another trophy to Pegula's collection but also cements her status as one of the top players on tour today.
