Tsonga sails past Seppi, enters round 3

By Biswajeet Panda
Melbourne, Jan 20: Tsonga is back to his best and he gave ample demonstration of it in his 6-3, 7-6, 7-6 victory over Andreas Seppi in the second round of Australian Open 2011.

Towering at 6'2", and weighing more than 200 pounds, he resembles a boxer ready to smash cheekbones. But he is into tennis, and apart from his fitness troubles, he is very good one at that. Never mind that he has not won a grand slam yet, but he has always threatened to do one. And at the Rod Laver arena, he is once again showing glimpses of his huge potential.

Though Tsonga didn't quite win the match against Seppi as convincingly as he would have liked to, but nevertheless he won it in a way much better than his first round encounter. It should do his confidence a world of good.

He moved around the court without any signs of discomfiture, and his shots were as ferocious as it was in the season of 2008 when he made it to the finals of Australian Open. Now with fitness concerns erased and a game slowly but steadily reaching its pinnacle, it will be interesting to see how far Tsonga goes in this edition of the Australian Open.

Tsonga will now take on Alexandr Dolgopolov in the third round.
