Kim Clijsters and Li Na move up WTA rankings

By Biswajeet Panda
Paris, Feb 3: Kim Clijsters who in Jan 2011 won her maiden Australian Open Women's Singles title has sprung back to No.2 in WTA rankings. She is now within a striking distance of the No.1 slot which has been retained by Caroline Wozniacki despite her once again failing to win a Grand Slam title.

Both of them were followed by Russia's Vera Zvonareva, Italy's Francesca Schiavone and Australia's Sam Stosur respectively to round off the top 5.

Venus Williams of the USA, China's Li Na, Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska were ranked No.6 to No.10 respectively. Meanwhile Serena Williams who has been sidelined with a foot injury since her Wimbledon 2010 title triumph, dropped from No. 4 to No. 12.

Li Na who was beaten by Clijsters in the Australian Open Women's Singles final became the first Chinese woman to be ranked World No.7.

For the first time, the top 10 players in the women's tennis rankings represent 10 different countries, to which WTA Chair and CEO Stacey Allaster said, "Having 10 different players represent the top 10 rankings shows how truly global tennis has become."
