Paes, Bhupathi enter Aus open quarter-finals

By Biswajeet Panda
Melbourne, Jan 24: Indian Express is chugging along at the Australian Open Men's double 2011. The pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, fought hard to win the three set match over Tommy Robredo and Marcel Granollers 6-4 4-6 6-4.

The match between the Indian and the Spanish pair lasted for one hour and 52 minutes in which fate dwindled like a pendulum. Paes and Bhupathi, aiming for their maiden Australian Open title, won the first set 6-4 in 33 minutes.

The Spanish pair did well to come back in the second set which lasted for a little above 41 minutes. They took the set 6-4, exactly the same margin as the Indians did in the first set. In the end it turned out to be a battle of wits, experience and perseverance, which the Indian Pair had in abundance.

They held on to their own and won the third set but not without a fight from the Spanish pair. Quite remarkably the Indian Pair did a cent percent break-point conversion.

This victory will now let them meet either the Indo-Pak pair of Boppana and Quereshi or the French-Serbian combination of Micheal Lodra and Nenad Zimonjic in the Men's doubles quarter-finals.
