Jiri Lehecka Shocks Daniil Medvedev To Reach Cincinnati Open Last 16

Jiri Lehecka defeated Daniil Medvedev in straight sets at the Cincinnati Open, marking a significant victory after returning from a three-month injury break. This win propels him into the last 16 and sets up a match against Frances Tiafoe.

Daniil Medvedev faced another early exit, this time at the Cincinnati Open, where he was defeated by Jiri Lehecka in straight sets. Medvedev, who had also lost his opening match in Montreal to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, fell 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 to the Czech player in just under two hours.

Lehecka expressed his delight at returning to competition after a three-month injury hiatus. "It's amazing to be back, to be honest. To get a win against such a talented player as Daniil surely is, is just such a bonus for me," Lehecka said. This victory marked his first tournament appearance since recovering from injury.

Lehecka Stuns Medvedev in Cincinnati

The match began with both players missing early opportunities to break each other's serve. Lehecka squandered four game points in the opener, while Medvedev also missed a chance for an early break. However, the Czech managed to hold his opening serve.

The decisive moment came in the seventh game of the second set when Lehecka broke Medvedev's serve, edging closer to victory. Despite missing four match points in the final two games, Lehecka secured the win on his fifth attempt with a powerful serve. This set up a meeting with Frances Tiafoe in the next round.

Since 1990, Lehecka has become the fourth player ranked outside the ATP's top 30 to secure top-five wins at three ATP Masters 1000 events in a single season. He follows Gaston Gaudio (2001), Hicham Arazi (2001), and Tommy Paul (2022) in achieving this feat.

Medvedev's Struggles Continue

Medvedev's recent form on hard courts has been concerning. Excluding the ATP Tour Finals, this marks the first time since October 2017 that he has lost three consecutive ATP matches on hard court.

The tiebreaker in the first set saw Medvedev struggle significantly, losing three consecutive games and handing Lehecka an advantage. The pair continued trading blows throughout the match, but it was Lehecka who ultimately emerged victorious.

This victory is significant for Lehecka as he continues his winning return at Cincinnati. His performance against Medvedev highlights his potential and resilience following his injury layoff.

Medvedev will need to regroup and address these recent setbacks as he prepares for upcoming tournaments. His current form raises questions about his readiness for future competitions on hard courts.
