Sharapova scampers into round 4 of Aus Open

By Biswajeet Panda
Melbourne, Jan 21: Maria Sharapova scampered past Julia Goerges of Germany 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Jan 21 to move into the fourth round of Australian Open 2011.

The winner of the 2008 Australian Open Women's title, Sharapova had an erratic day at office. She hit seven aces intertwined with 11 double faults. Luckily for her though, the most important ace also came on the match point.

A bump near the nets, which first caught the attention of Sharapova, delayed the start of the match. But once the bump was sorted out, the match started as an high-octane affair. Both Sharapova and Goerges, played some aggressive but erratic tennis.

In the end, it was all Sharapova, as the sexy Russian pulled up her socks in the last set to win the match and make it to the last 16.

At the end of the match Sharapova said, "I wasn't really happy with the first set, especially being up a break," and added, "I played a really sloppy game on my serve, up 3‑2 in the first set. It's not really the right way: to break and then go out and have that type of game. I think I lost 40‑15. Just made too many errors.

In the fourth round she will now take up either Venus Williams or Andrea Petkovic.
