Davidovich Fokina Shocks Medvedev At Canadian Open; Zverev Progresses

Daniil Medvedev faces a surprising defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Canadian Open. Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev secures an easy win to advance.

Daniil Medvedev experienced an unusual hard-court defeat to a lower-ranked opponent as Alejandro Davidovich Fokina eliminated him from the Canadian Open in the last 32. The third seed Medvedev lost 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 to world number 43 Davidovich Fokina in a match that lasted one hour and 56 minutes in Montreal.

Davidovich Fokina, who reached the semi-finals of the tournament in 2023, will now compete against either Karen Khachanov or Matteo Arnaldi for a spot in the quarter-finals. This defeat marks only Medvedev's third loss on hard court to an opponent ranked outside the ATP's top 20 since early 2023, with Sebastian Korda responsible for the other two losses.

Medvedev was not alone in facing an upset on Thursday. Japan's Kei Nishikori defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4, marking his first top-20 victory since 2021. This win is significant for Nishikori as he continues his comeback from injuries.

In contrast, world number four Alexander Zverev had a much easier time on the court. He dominated Jordan Thompson with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory to advance to the third round. Zverev won an impressive 95% (18/19) of points behind his first serve and hit 20 winners past Thompson.

This performance was particularly notable as Thompson had previously led their head-to-head series 2-1. Zverev’s commanding display showcased his strong form and readiness for the upcoming rounds.

The Canadian Open continues to deliver surprising results and thrilling matches as players vie for a place in the later stages of the tournament. Fans can expect more exciting tennis action as the competition progresses.
