Daniil Medvedev Secures Win At US Open, Sets Sights On Second Championship

Daniil Medvedev defeated Flavio Cobolli in the US Open, moving into the fourth round. As the only former champion left, he eyes his second title amidst earlier upsets.

Daniil Medvedev secured a decisive victory over Flavio Cobolli in the US Open evening session, ensuring he did not meet the same fate as Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. The Russian, now the sole former champion left in the men's field at Flushing Meadows, triumphed 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and 18 minutes.

Despite Cobolli's strong efforts, including an early break and defending set points six times across the first two sets, he couldn't pull off an upset. Medvedev's performance was marked by 33 winners, showcasing his dominance. He will face Nuno Borges in the fourth round in New York.

Medvedev Advances in US Open

"I said it before the match that for me the upsets don't really matter," Medvedev remarked. "The only thing [is when] the conditions are a bit tricky, the favourites maybe have less margin than the other guys. Just have to be more cautious."

Reflecting on his match against Cobolli, Medvedev noted, "It was a tough match. It was just a little bit up and down, and at one moment I started playing much better on my serve than on his." He added confidently, "If I play good tennis I can win the whole thing. If I don't play good, I can lose against anyone."

This victory marked Medvedev's 138th combined match win on hard courts (grand slams and ATP Masters 1000 events), tying him with Roger Federer for the second-most wins on this surface in the past decade. Only Novak Djokovic has more with 227 wins.

Medvedev has now reached the fourth round of men's singles events at grand slams on hard courts for the 11th time. He is also the only Russian in the Open era to achieve this milestone more than ten times.

With two of the tournament favourites already out of contention, Medvedev's chances of clinching a second US Open title look promising. His consistent performance and ability to handle pressure make him a formidable contender as he progresses further in the competition.

The ATP Tour highlighted Medvedev's focused approach with a tweet: "Eyes on the prize @DaniilMedwed battles past Cobolli 6-3 6-4 6-3.@usopen | #USOpen". This encapsulates his determination to succeed amidst challenging conditions.

As Medvedev continues his journey at Flushing Meadows, his experience and skill on hard courts will be crucial. Fans eagerly anticipate his upcoming matches to see if he can secure another grand slam title.
