Merciless Coco Gauff masters Sofia Kenin with Miami double bagel

By Ben Spratt

Coco Gauff achieved the second double bagel of her career in a ruthless defeat of Sofia Kenin at the Miami Open. Playing her tournament opener, Gauff made light work of her fellow American former major champion, completing a 6-0 6-0 victory in 47 minutes.

This was even quicker than Gauff's only previous blemish-free win when she beat Arantxa Rus in 51 minutes at last year's Madrid Open. Gauff's latest rout was every bit as one-sided as the scoreline suggests, with Kenin winning just 18 points in total as she passed up a sole break point opportunity.

Kenin had eliminated Petra Kvitova in the first round, as Gauff enjoyed a bye, but she was dominated by the same opponent who beat her in straight sets at this year's Australian Open. Gauff could play Maria Sakkari next, having beaten the Greek at Indian Wells. Sakkari faces Lucia Bronzetti for a place in the third round.

Data debrief: Coco clear of Caroline

For Gauff, who turned 21 last week, this was already a 57th match win at a WTA 1000 event. That is now the most in the format before the age of 22 since it was introduced in 2009, edging ahead of Caroline Wozniacki's 56. No other player has more than 40.

Gauff also became the youngest player to record a double bagel in the women's singles draw in Miami since Madison Keys, then 18, in 2013.
