Mirra Andreeva reaches landmark quarter-final after setting up Iga Swiatek showdown

By Jonathan Davies

Mirra Andreeva made WTA 1000 history as she reached the Dubai Tennis Championship quarter-finals with a pair of impressive victories on Wednesday (February 19).

The 17-year-old saw off former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova 7-5 6-0, before taking just 73 minutes to wrap up a 6-1 6-1 rout of Peyton Stearns.

Andrreva is the youngest player to reach four quarter-finals in WTA 1000 tournaments since the format's introduction in 2009. A mouth-watering showdown with Iga Swiatek awaits her in the last eight.

However, there was no joy for Jessica Pegula, with the world number five beaten 6-3 7-6 (10-8) by Linda Noskova in the round of 16.

Eighth seed Emma Navarro - despite beating former Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic earlier on - was also ousted, losing a three-hour epic against wildcard Sorana Cirstea.
