It is for the first time since 2003 that two Spaniards are at the top

Garbine Muguruza

Bengaluru, September 12: Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza, who was crowned as the new women's world No.1 on Monday (September 12) also becomes the first player to qualify for the WTA Tour Finals to be held in Singapore.

The tournament to be held from October 22 to 29 at Kallang in Singapore features the top eight WTA players drawn into a round-robin format with the top two from each group advancing to the semifinals.

The 23-year-old, who lost to Petra Kvitova in the US Open fourth round has so far accumulated 5,307 points in the Race to Singapore.

The Spaniard became just the second player from her country after Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to become the world No.1 and the 24th woman overall to hold the top ranking ranking.

With US Open champion Rafael Nadal topping the men's standings, it is for the first time since 2003 that two Spaniards are at the top respectively in the ATP and WTA rankings.

"Becoming the WTA No.1 in the world is a dream come true," Muguruza said on WTA website.

"Every birthday wish was always the same as I blew out the candles - to become the best. There is a lot of work behind this achievement and a lot of love and passion for this sport. There's also a lot of hard moments along with the great moments. Not to mention the extreme amount of love from my family and the appreciation for my fans and all the people that have helped me in this journey. And I am very proud to share such a special moment for our country with Rafael Nadal, the best role model I could ever have. I look forward to continue working hard to keep this position," she added.
