Muslim Personal Law Board denies any "fatwa" against Sania
Chennai, Jan 12 (UNI) The All India Muslim Personal Law Board today made it clear that no ''fatwa'' was ever issued against tennis star Sania Mirza for wearing revealing clothes on the courts.
Briefing newspersons on the deliberations of the 19th session of the Board here, its Assistant General Secretary Abdur Rahim Qureshi said ''there is no fatwa againt Sania''.
He said ''fatwa'' was an authentic opinion given based on the principles enshrined in the Quran and only a Mufti (Scholar) could issue it.
An Imam cannot issue a ''fatwa'', he clarified.
The view against Sania wearing short skirts while playing might have been the opinion of some, Mr Qureshi said.
It may be recalled that Sania herself had issued a clarification that the dresses she was wearing while playing was not for glamour but only related to feeling comfortable while moving on the court in the course of a match.
