Sumit Nagal Exits Top-100 ATP Rankings While Rohan Bopanna Falls from Top-20 After Australian Open

Sumit Nagal, an Indian tennis player, has exited the ATP singles top-100 rankings after a 10-month streak. His recent performances have been disappointing, causing him to drop 16 places to rank 106 with 565 points.

Meanwhile, veteran Rohan Bopanna also slipped from the top-20 in doubles following an early exit at the Australian Open, where he was defending significant points.

Nagal first entered the top-100 in February 2024, maintaining his position since March of the same year. This achievement was largely due to his strong performance at the season's first Major. However, his recent form has been less impressive. Since Wimbledon 2024, he has participated in 18 tournaments but only secured three main draw victories on both the Tour and Challenger circuits.

Indian Tennis Rankings Update

In doubles, Bopanna, aged 44, dropped five places to number 21 after losing in the Australian Open's opening round with new partner Nicolas Barrientos. He had consistently been in the top-20 since October 3, 2022. Yuki Bhambri remains at number 47, followed by N Sriram Balaji at 64 (+1), Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli at 79 (-7), and Arjun Kadhe at 83 (+1).

A top-100 ranking is crucial for players like Nagal as it grants direct entry into major events, including Grand Slams. Even early exits in these tournaments can offer substantial prize money. Following Nagal in the singles rankings are Sasikumar Mukund at number 365 (+2), Ramkumar Ramanathan at 406 (-1), Karan Singh at 496 (-20), and Aryan Shah at 593 (-9).

Davis Cup Participation

Mukund, Ramanathan, Balaji, Karan Singh, and Bollipalli are part of India's Davis Cup team set to face Togo in the World Group I Play-off on February 1-2. Notably absent from this lineup are Nagal and Bhambri, who have opted out of participating in the match.

Bopanna's drop in rankings was influenced by his need to defend many points as the Australian Open defending champion. His early exit with Barrientos marked a significant setback. Despite this, Bopanna continues to play competitively at an age when many players retire.

The current rankings reflect both challenges and opportunities for Indian tennis players on the international stage. Maintaining or improving their positions requires consistent performance across various tournaments worldwide.
