Naomi Osaka Stays Positive After Canadian Open Defeat, Eyes Future Success

Naomi Osaka exited the Canadian Open with a loss to Elise Mertens but remained positive, viewing it as a learning opportunity for future success. Despite errors and an early exit, she looks forward to improving and returning to the top ten.

Naomi Osaka exited the Canadian Open after a straight-sets loss to Elise Mertens in the second round on Thursday. The Belgian player secured her second victory over Osaka this year, winning 6-3, 6-4 in Toronto. This win sets up a match against Liudmila Samsonova in the round of 16.

Osaka faced difficulties with baseline errors and couldn't find her rhythm, impacting her US Open preparations. Despite the loss, she remained positive about her performance. "I feel like I could have put a bit more on the court, a bit more from the baseline shots," Osaka said. "I got a bit caught up in the idea of being consistent and staying in the exchanges, I don't know."

Osaka Upbeat After Canadian Loss

She added, "I'm happy with how I fought despite not winning, but I feel like I learned a lot. Unfortunately, I have always suffered a lot from my perfectionism, and I also tend to doubt myself a lot, but I think it's necessary to go through this process and have tough losses from which you can learn a lot about yourself."

Mertens held her nerve throughout the match and capitalised on Osaka's mistakes. She managed to break Osaka's serve four times while only conceding two breaks herself. Mertens' consistency proved too much for Osaka as she advanced to the next round.

Osaka struggled particularly with her second serve, winning just 37% of those points (10/27). She also failed to string together more than two consecutive game wins during the match.

Future Aspirations

Despite this setback, Osaka remains hopeful about returning to top form. "I know there will be many tough defeats like this one," she said. "But hopefully, I hope to be back in the top ten soon."

The defeat marks another learning experience for Osaka as she continues to navigate her career challenges. Her focus now shifts towards improving and preparing for future tournaments.

Osaka's journey continues as she aims to overcome these hurdles and regain her position among tennis elites. Her determination remains evident as she looks forward to future competitions.
