Novak Djokovic Alleges Poisoning During 2022 Australian Detention

By MyKhel Staff

Novak Djokovic, the world-renowned tennis player, has made a startling revelation regarding his 2022 detention in Australia. In a recent interview, Djokovic claimed he was "poisoned" during his stay at Melbourne's Park Hotel, a facility used for quarantine and detention.

In January 2022, Djokovic was at the center of a global controversy when he arrived in Australia to participate in the Australian Open without meeting the country's COVID-19 vaccination requirements. Despite possessing a medical exemption, his visa was canceled, leading to his detention at the Park Hotel and subsequent deportation.

Reflecting on his experience, Djokovic revealed that upon returning to Serbia, he experienced significant health issues. "I had some health issues. And I realised that in that hotel in Melbourne I was fed some food that poisoned me," he stated. Medical evaluations indicated elevated levels of heavy metals in his system.

"I had a really high level of heavy metal... a very high level of lead and mercury," Djokovic disclosed. When questioned about the source of the poisoning, Djokovic attributed it to the food provided during his detention. "That's the only way," he affirmed.

He described the severity of his illness, noting that what initially seemed like a simple flu had a prolonged and debilitating effect, prompting the need for toxicology tests. The Park Hotel which began housing refugees and asylum seekers in 2020, had been criticized for its subpar conditions.

Djokovic's detention brought international attention to the facility, highlighting the experiences of other detainees. By April 2022, three months after Djokovic's deportation, the remaining detainees were released. Djokovic also shed light on the restrictive conditions during his detention.

He mentioned that he was given a list of items, each assigned a point value, and was limited in his selections. "I had 60 points in total of what I was allowed to receive," he explained. This system further exemplified the challenging environment he faced during that period.

Australia's Department of Home Affairs declined to comment on individual cases when approached about Djokovic's allegations. These revelations add a new dimension to the controversies surrounding Djokovic's 2022 Australian Open saga.
