ATP Finals: Djokovic withdraws due to 'ongoing injury'

Novak Djokovic cited an "ongoing injury" as he withdrew from the season-ending ATP Finals.

Djokovic triumphed in three sets over Lorenzo Musetti on Saturday (November 8) to win his second Tour-level final of the season at the Athens Open.

The 38-year-old came from behind to prevail 4-6 6-3 7-5 over the Italian, who needed a victory to book his place at the ATP Finals.

However, in the wake of that victory, Djokovic, who has won the ATP Finals a record seven times, confirmed he would not feature in Turin, handing Musetti a reprieve.

"I was really looking forward to competing in Turin and giving my best but after today’s final in Athens, I’m sad to share that I need to withdraw due to an ongoing injury," Djokovic wrote on social media on Saturday.

"I’m truly sorry to the fans who were hoping to see me play — your support means so much.

"I wish all the players an amazing tournament, and I can’t wait to be back on the court with you all soon!"

The ATP Finals starts on Sunday, with Carlos Alcaraz taking on Alex de Minaur and Alexander Zverev facing Ben Shelton.

Musetti's first match will come against Taylor Fritz on Monday, with reigning champion Jannik Sinner going up against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
