World number 1 Jannik Sinner has said he is hugely disappointed as the Italian tennis star confirmed on Wednesday (July 24) his withdrawal from the Paris Olympics 2024 due to tonsillitis.
The 2024 Australian Open champion was set to carry on from a strong start to the year by representing Italy at the Paris Games, but doctors have adviced him against competing in a month hampered by illness.

Sinner, who hasn't played since his Wimbledon quarter-final defeat against Daniil Medvedev, took to social media to break the news of his withdrawal from the Olympics just a day ahead of the draw in Paris.
"I am saddened to inform you that unfortunately I will not be able to participate in the Paris Olympic Games," Sinner posted in Italian on X before adding that he started to feel unwell.
"After a good week of clay training I started to feel unwell. I spent a couple of days resting and during a visit the doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing."
The youngster said he was hugely disappointed of missing out on the chance to fulfill his main goal for the season, adding that representing Italy at such an important even was an honour for him.
"Missing the Games is a huge disappointment as it was one of my main goals for this season. I couldn't wait to have the honor of representing my country in this very important event," Sinner added.
The tennis star concluded by wishing luck to the rest of the Italian contingent at the games, "Good luck to all the Italian athletes who I will support from home. Forza Italia."
Earlier during the Wimbledon, Sinner revealed that he fought dizziness and illness as he fell to an epic five-set defeat to Medvedev in the quarter-finals. Despite the illness and medical time out, the Italian rallied brilliantly in the fourth to force a decider in a marathon contest on Centre Court.
