Paes gains one spot in ATP doubles rankings

New Delhi, Jun 9 (UNI) Tennis ace Leander Paes climbed to the 23rd spot while his former partner Mahesh Bhupathi went down four places to be ranked 13th in the latest ATP doubles rankings issued today.

Paes, who was previously at 24th position, made the climb despite his unimpressive show at the French Open where he lost in the third-round. He is now on 1995 points.

Bhupathi also had a poor run at Roland Garros. He and his Bahamian partner Mark Knowles crashed out of the opening round of the mens' doubles competition.

He had a better show in the mixed doubles where he defeated Paes in the first round but was forced to pull out of the semifinals with a calf injury.

Meanwhile, in the womens' section, Sania Mirza went down a spot to 33 in the latest WTA singles rankings.

Sania, who missed the French Open due to a wrist injury, has 857 points.

French open champion Ana Ivanovic of Serbia holds the pole position displacing Maria Sharapova of Russia.

Ivanovic's compatriot Jelena Jankovic retained her third spot, while Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva were fourth and fifth respectively.
