Paes-Shaughnessy storms into second round, Bhupathi-Suarez shocked

Paris, June 3 (UNI) Leander Paes and his American partner Meghann Shaughnessy stormed into the second round of mixed doubles event, while estranged partner Mahesh Bhupati and Paola Suarez of Argentina were shocked by unseeded Italian-Aussie duo at the French Open here.

After a shocking exit from the doubles, Leander Paes pulled up his socks as he and Shaughnessy trounced seventh seeded duo of Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei and American Mike Bryan 6-2, 6-0 in just 43 minutes.

The match was totally an one-sided affair as the Indo-American duo did not give any breathing space to their highly-seeded opponents in both the sets.

Paes and Shaughnessy will now take on unseeded Sybille Bammer of Austria and Marcin Matkowski of Poland in the second round.

However, it was a totally different cup of tea for Bhupathi-Suarez pair who were shocked by the unseeded Italian-Aussie pair of Tathiana Garbin and Paul Hanley 6-7, 3-6.

The first set was evenly contested as both the teams held their serve to take the set into the tie-breaker. But the Indo-Argentinian pair succumbed to pressure and faltered in the tie-breaker to hand over the set to their opponents.

Down one-set, Bhupathi and Suarez tried hard to comeback in the second set, but their Italian-Aussie duo seemed too strong and powered their way into the second round in 75 minutes.
