Paris Olympics 2024: Djokovic Prefers Nadal's Opponent, But Anticipates 'Last Dance' With King Of Clay

Novak Djokovic defeated Matthew Ebden in straight sets at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, fueling his ambition for Olympic gold. A potential match against Rafael Nadal looms, promising an epic showdown in what could be one of their final contests.

Novak Djokovic showcased an impressive performance during his debut at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The former number one defeated Australia's Matthew Ebden in straight sets, winning 6-0 and 6-1. This victory fuels Djokovic's ambition to secure his first gold medal after earning a bronze in Beijing 2008.

Djokovic's next opponent will be decided from the match between Rafael Nadal and Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. This potential matchup has garnered significant attention as it could be Nadal's last Olympic event.

Djokovic Last Dance With Nadal A Possibility

Djokovic expressed mixed feelings about facing Nadal, stating, "If I had to choose, I would prefer to play against the other player, but I think it would be a huge moment for the tournament."

Historic Rivalry

The rivalry between Djokovic and Nadal is legendary, with both players having won a combined total of 46 Grand Slam titles. Their head-to-head record stands at 30-29 in favour of Djokovic. They have faced each other twelve times on the clay courts of Roland Garros, where Nadal leads with an 8-2 record.

Reflecting on their past encounters, Djokovic mentioned that he looks forward to potentially facing Nadal again. "Everyone wants to see that last dance between us and I'm looking forward to it," he said. Their last meeting was at Roland Garros in 2022, where Nadal emerged victorious in four sets.

Controversial Debut Match

Djokovic also voiced his concerns regarding his debut opponent, Matthew Ebden. Ebden entered the main draw as a replacement for Holger Rune, who withdrew from the competition. "I honestly don't understand the meaning of the rules," Djokovic remarked, questioning why a doubles player had to fill in for a singles match.

Ebden shared his thoughts on facing Djokovic, acknowledging the challenge. "It would have been funny to say goodbye to singles with a zero and zero, but at least I got a game," he said. He also noted that his primary goal was not to get injured ahead of his doubles debut.

Facing One of the Best

Ebden reflected on playing against Djokovic compared to other top players like Roger Federer and Andy Murray. "You feel that you can play the points, but you can't really win them," he explained. He highlighted how relentless Djokovic's game is, making it difficult to secure points despite good play.

If Djokovic faces Nadal in the next round, it could be an opportunity for him to avenge his loss from the semifinals of the 2008 Olympic Games. Back then, Nadal defeated him in three sets before going on to win gold.

The anticipation surrounding this potential matchup adds excitement to the tournament as fans eagerly await what could be one of their final showdowns on such a grand stage.
