In the photo, Badosa appeared to be pulling her eyes back using chopsticks, a gesture often considered offensive and racist, especially in East Asian countries like China. Toledo tagged the official China Open account in the post, further amplifying its visibility and drawing attention to the gesture.

Almost immediately, social media users flooded the post with accusations of racism. Many interpreted Badosa’s gesture as a mockery of Asian facial features, which has been a historically derogatory stereotype. The backlash was swift and strong, with critics condemning the image as racially insensitive, particularly in the context of Badosa’s presence in China during the tournament season.

Badosa's Initial Response

Paula Badosa was quick to respond to the accusations, taking to social media to clarify her intentions. In a now-deleted comment, she defended herself by saying, “We weren’t even imitating Asian people. Shortly after the controversy, Badosa withdrew from the Wuhan Open, citing a gastrointestinal illness. Before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Spain’s basketball federation came under fire for an advertisement that showed players pulling at the sides of their eyes, a gesture widely seen as offensive. At the time, basketball star Pau Gasol apologized on behalf of the team, saying, “It was just a bad idea to do that. It was never intended to be offensive or racist against anybody.”
