Pegula Triumphs Over Anisimova To Retain Canadian Open Crown

Jessica Pegula successfully defended her Canadian Open title by overcoming Amanda Anisimova in a decisive match. This victory marks Pegula's sixth Tour-level title and places her among the elite to defend the title in Canada.

Jessica Pegula retained her Canadian Open title by defeating Amanda Anisimova in the final on Monday. Pegula, seeded third, won 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 against her fellow American in Toronto. The 30-year-old ended Anisimova's hopes of a surprise victory and secured her fifth top-20 win of the tournament.

Pegula's triumph makes her the seventh player in the Open Era to defend her title at the Canadian Open. She joins an elite group that includes Chris Evert, Evonne Goolagong, Martina Navratilova, Regina Marsikova, Monica Seles, and Martina Hingis. Hingis was the last to achieve this feat in 1999-2000.

Pegula Retains Canadian Open

In the opening set, Pegula dominated with her serve. However, Anisimova responded strongly in the second set with a swift break to level the match. Pegula regained control in the final set with two quick breaks and sealed victory on her third match point despite Anisimova's resistance.

Pegula has now won six Tour-level titles, including three WTA 1000 events: Guadalajara 2022, Montreal 2023, and Toronto 2024. Her consistent performance has established her as a formidable player on the tour.

Hailing from Buffalo, just south of the border, Pegula has enjoyed significant success in Canada over the past two years. She is only the second player this century to win the Canadian Open titles in both Toronto and Montreal, alongside Simona Halep.

Breaking Records

No player had successfully defended a WTA 1000 title since Iga Swiatek did so at Rome in 2022. Additionally, no player had defended a hard court WTA 1000 title since Ashleigh Barty retained her Miami crown in 2021.
