Emma Raducanu is reflecting on her first-round defeat to Sofia Kenin at the US Open. Raducanu, who clinched the title in 2021, lost in three sets: 1-6, 6-3, 4-6 to her American opponent at Flushing Meadows. The loss left her in tears after the match.
"I feel down, I feel sad," an emotional Raducanu said. "Obviously, this is a tournament I really want to do well in. I was maybe a bit slow starting. I would have preferred to probably play a little bit more before coming into the US Open."

Despite being outplayed by Kenin in the opening set, Raducanu, ranked world number 72, fought back in the second set to extend the match. However, Kenin proved too strong in the final set, securing an all-American encounter with Jessica Pegula in the round of 64.
Sofia Kenin's victory over Raducanu marked a significant win for the former Grand Slam champion. Kenin showcased her resilience that won her the Australian Open in 2020 by saving six of the nine break points she faced during their match.
Raducanu acknowledged that she could learn from this experience and manage her schedule differently. "You know when I have a lot of matches, just like every player, you feel really good. You feel like everything's automatic," she added.
The match between Raducanu and Kenin was notable as it was the second R128 match at this year's US Open featuring two former women's singles Grand Slam winners.
In spite of serving four of her six aces during the final set, Raducanu couldn't overcome Kenin's strength and consistency on court.
This defeat has been a learning curve for Raducanu as she aims to refine her approach and preparation for future tournaments.
