Southpaws are classy, they bring in that extra zing, something refreshing. And if you get used to watching them, fandom turns into a love affair. Like any sad ending to a love affair, when there is a split, it leaves one person in tears.

Rafael Nadal - The Romantic Relic Waves Goodbye Through Painful Video Post

Pinching yourself or rubbing your eyes in disbelief, well, the truth is, Rafa has posted an emotional video which sums up his agony. Emotions which stir you, churn you, want you to shout and bring the Spanish hero back for one last time. Well, that will happen at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga in December 2024. Be sure, this last hurrah will be painful, just as Roger Federer walked into sunset in 2022.

Hero or legend, daring or demolishing, tennis player par excellence or magician, fans can debate, and fight on chats and social media. To say goodbye after years of breathtaking tennis shows, Nadal churns you. Even Nick Kyrgios, his bitter rival, wants Nadal to return!

This is as if the soul of tennis is being robbed since just 22 Grand Slam titles won by the Spaniard alone do not define his greatness. The aura, the swagger, yet being a thorough gentleman, Rafa made you fall in love. And now, it's the last wave, the last dance, which you will choke over next month. After all, seeing old videos cannot make up for live performances.

In his youth, when his hairstyle was a rage, girls fell head over heels. Rafa churned hearts and hormones, he was the quintessential playboy who had the looks and game to dominate. And to be in an era where two more challenged his supremacy, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, Rafa never made it ugly.

His demeanour on and off the court defines his character, which is why he is so special. Behind all the steel and strength, there is also a harsh reality Rafa was in pain the last two years. A body which had been sculpted was not coping. His game was physical all along but suddenly there were fitness issues.

Knee, ankle, joints, all creaking. Nadal tried hard to fight it. In vain. The 2023 year was one of misery for Nadal. He wanted a year off in the hope the Olympic year would be different.

No, his last appearance at Roland Garros, where he played in the Paris 2024 Olympics did not leave great memories. So what, he still won 14 titles on red clay, a feat which the French Open is aware of.

If Paris is famous for the Eiffel Tower, Nadal has also made a monumental contribution to the city. And the best part, he leaves us still craving for more. That's the key, to retiring when fans beg and say: "Don't go away."

The Rafa show was once in a lifetime, an act of brilliance and defiance. He mastered each surface for titles at all the four Majors - Grand Slams. Indeed, the 2022 effort in Melbourne and Paris will be remembered for long. But how many would have predicted, his body would also break down and there would be no more famous wins?

It's OK, he produced loads of magic. For those who still want a GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) debate on social media, please remember a champion like Nadal will never come again. He is truly the once-in-a-lifetime champion.
