Rio de Janeiro, Aug 9: Argentine tennis player Juan Martin del Potro, fresh off a stunning upset of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, beat Portugal's Joao Sousa 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 here in a second-round match at the ongoing Rio Olympics.

The 27-year-old Del Potro, who defeated Djokovic to win the bronze medal in men's singles at the 2012 London Games, is ranked 141st in the world after struggling with serious wrist injuries in recent years, reports EFE.

Sousa, ranked 36th, started aggressively on Monday, succeeding where Djokovic failed by breaking Del Potro's service just before an altercation in the stands between Argentine and Brazilian fans forced a brief suspension of play.

Del Proto rallied after the interruption to break Sousa's serve and went on to win the first set.

The Argentine's next opponent in the singles competition will be Taro Daniel of Japan, who topped Briton's Kyle Edmund 6-4, 6-3 to claim a berth in the next round.
