Roddick hoping to be fit for Spain Davis Cup tie
MIAMI, Mar 29 (Reuters) US Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe is hoping Andy Roddick will be available for next weekend's tie with Spain after an examination revealed his hamstring injury was not as severe as first thought.
Roddick suffered the injury during his Sony Ericsson Open quarter-final against Andy Murray yesterday and was forced to retire trailing 5-3 in the first set.
''It's a positive report,'' McEnroe said is statement released by the United States Tennis Association.''The MRI done on Andy Roddick's hamstring came up negative.
''Andy tweaked a hamstring in the upper left part of his leg in about the fourth game of the match.
''The good news at least is that it is not torn, but it is a hamstring so that is kind of tricky.
''The word is from Andy that he is going to do everything he can to try to play in Davis Cup.'' Roddick, a grand slam winner and former world number one, called for a medical timeout to receive treatment in the locker-room when he trailed Murray 4-3.
The third seed returned to the court but was immediately broken. Roddick walked to the net to shake hands before informing the umpire he could not continue.
''Immediately, I was thinking about it (Davis Cup) when I was out there,'' Roddick told reporters. ''It's disappointing but right now I just want to focus on getting better.
''We have a pretty big weekend next weekend and that's obviously playing a part in the process.'' Reuters SAM GC1011
