Hard work pays off, drought ends for Federer

By Samyuktha
Mason (Ohio), Aug 23: Swiss ace Roger Federer announced the return of his winning-form by adding yet another Masters-title to his impressive record at the Cincinnati championship.

He thrashed Mardy Fish 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-4 here on Sunday, Aug 22 in the finals to end his months-long dry run.

"It's nice knowing that the hard work already in the off season after Wimbledon pays off right away," said Federer.

Federer recently lost the top spot on the world tennis rankings after he failed to win even a single title over the past seven months.

"I came close a couple times earlier in the season. I should have won Halle (in June), I could have won Madrid (in May), but things didn't really work my way. I was maybe playing a little bit too passive. Now I'm taking it more to the opponents again.

"I'm happy that that's the right game plan right now," the world number two added.

The last tournament he clinched was the Australian Open, after he overpowered Andy Murray in the finals.

By reclaiming the Cincinnati Championship, Federer has pocketed 63 career titles.
