The sixth edition of the Tennis Premier League (TPL) is set to kick off in Mumbai this December, featuring former World Number 1 Rohan Bopanna. Currently ranked world number 6 in men's doubles, Bopanna will make his debut in this much-anticipated tournament.
One of India's most celebrated tennis players, Bopanna's participation is expected to add a new dimension to the TPL. The league, which has successfully completed five seasons, aims to elevate the sport's profile with its innovative format. The 44-year-old Bopanna has an illustrious career, including two Grand Slam titles: the Australian Open in 2024 (Men's Doubles) and the French Open in 2017 (Mixed Doubles).

In the TPL, each franchise will play five matches to qualify for the semi-finals. The league employs a unique 25-point format that includes Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Mixed Doubles, and Men's Doubles. Each match between franchises will have 100 points at stake, divided equally among these categories. Teams will compete for a total of 500 points during the league stage, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals.
Bopanna has represented India in three Olympic Games, achieving his best finish of fourth place in Rio 2016. He also holds the record for being the oldest player to become World No. 1, a feat he accomplished earlier this year. With over 25 career titles, he joins an elite group of Indian tennis players who have reached the top rankings, including Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi, and Sania Mirza.
Bopanna will join other notable players like Sumit Nagal from India, Hugo Gaston from France, and Elina Avanesyan from Armenia at the iconic Cricket Club of India. This venue has hosted some of India's most memorable tennis events over the years.
"I'm thrilled to become a part of the Tennis Premier League, especially with its innovative 25-point format. It's a perfect way to wrap up the year. I believe that tournaments like the TPL, which are actively contributing to grassroots development, will inspire more young players," said Rohan Bopanna.
Kunal Thakkur, Co-Founder of TPL, expressed his excitement about Bopanna joining the league: "It is fantastic to have onboard with us the very dynamic Rohan Bopanna. His credentials and abilities are something we don't need to touch upon for obvious reasons, and we are confident that his presence will not only give a boost to the sixth season of TPL but also motivate the other players that tad bit more."
Mrunal Jain, another Co-Founder of TPL, added: "Rohan Bopanna is one of the icons of Indian tennis, and we are elated to see that he will be playing in TPL Season 6. Not only will that have heads turning in Mumbai but also around the tennis world as well."
Bopanna's extensive experience on the ATP Tour spans nearly two decades. His participation in TPL is expected to bring fresh excitement and competitive spirit to this already thrilling league.
The Tennis Premier League continues its mission to revolutionise how tennis is played and perceived in India. With seasoned players like Bopanna joining its ranks, fans can look forward to an exhilarating season filled with high-stakes matches and exceptional talent on display.
