'Nobody reaches World No. 1 Ranking Without...' Says Rohan Bopanna After Remarkable Achievement at 43

By MyKhel Staff

India's tennis star Rohan Bopanna said he had his eyes on the Doubles World No. 1 Ranking since reaching the US Open final and Wimbledon semifinals in the men's category last year. The 43-year-old will soon be the new No. 1 once the ATP Rankings are refreshed after the Australian Open 2024.

Rohan Bopanna secured a place in the semifinals of the ongoing Australian Open 2024 with his doubles partner Matthew Ebden, which guaranteed his spot at the summit of the ATP doubles rankings.

While addressing a press conference, Boppana said, "Extremly proud that I was able to achieve the number 1 ranking it was a dream to get close to get to the top ranking. After a successful last year, I believed that I could get close to the number one ranking."

"I think nobody reaches the World no. 1 ranking without consistency, it doesn't happen overnight. I think today that is what is proven and that is why I was able to get to the ranking. I still have the opportunity to do so, today I am here sitting at the number 1 ranking because I had the opportunity to do so. Don't look what has gone by look what is ahead that is what I tell the young athletes."

Not only did Bopanna become the oldest player to win the men's doubles title, but at the Australian Open 2024, he also accomplished the remarkable feat of 500 career wins in professional tennis.

Rohan Bopanna is one of the most distinguished tennis pros in India with 21 career titles. In tennis, he has been something of a journeyman, always changing his style of play. Had they lost to the Australian duo of James Duckworth and Marc Polmans in the opening round, the accomplished accomplishments of the seasoned Indian player would have been unthinkable.

With the scoreboard displaying 5-0 in favor of the Australian duo, Bopnna and Ebden were out of the first set. Against all odds, they persevered well and took the set to a tie tie-break. With their experience, Bopanna and Ebden eventually won the first set and the match.

Bopanna talked about the biggest asset that he and Matthew share on the court and said: "I think the biggest strength on the court is that both of us are very calm."

Bopanna and Ebden will fac China's Zhizhen Zhang and Czech Republic's Tomas Machac in the semi-final round on Thursday.
