Davis Cup: India's Non Playing Captain Rohit Rajpal on Importance of Playing at Home Ahead of Togo Tie

The Indian Davis Cup team, led by Captain Rohit Rajpal, prepares to host Togo in February 2024. The match offers a vital opportunity for young players to gain experience and leverage home advantage at the DLTA Complex.

India's Davis Cup Captain, Rohit Rajpal, emphasized the importance of hosting the upcoming contest against Togo on home ground as a pivotal moment for nurturing future tennis champions.

This home tie presents a prime opportunity to cultivate the next generation of Davis Cup stars, enhancing their skills in a familiar environment. With the competition scheduled for February 1-2, the Indian team is gearing up for what promises to be an exciting event.

The five-member team representing India includes Sasikumar Mukund, Ramkumar Ramanathan, Karan Singh, N. Sriram Balaji, and Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli. Among them, Sasikumar Mukund stands out as the highest-ranked player, positioned at number 368 globally. His return to the squad marks a significant moment, especially after his last performance against Morocco in Lucknow.

The host advantage is something Captain Rajpal is particularly optimistic about, especially after the Indian team spent the 2024 season playing away matches. The past few seasons have seen the team traveling extensively, with four out of their last five ties being held abroad.

This included a notable match against Pakistan in Islamabad. Rajpal, who also serves as the President of the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA), highlighted the benefits of playing on home ground, noting the adaptability of the team to the slow, hard courts of the DLTA, despite the absence of Sumit Nagal.

With the contest set to take place at the DLTA Complex, preparations are already underway. Starting January 23, the Indian Davis Cup team will begin its training at the venue, which is also getting a facelift to welcome both the players and the officials from Togo, as well as the home supporters.

Enhancements include the beautification of the venue and the establishment of a players' lounge near the centre court, ensuring a warm reception for all attendees.

Togo, with key player Thomas Steodji leading their charge, comes into the tie with a commendable record of three wins against Latvia, Indonesia, and Benin. Despite this, Rajpal remains confident in the Indian team's capabilities.

"I will not say that it will be a cakewalk for us but the tie will give us the option to groom the next generation of players in the Davis Cup environment and playing at home, we can definitely utilize the home advantage and home support", he stated.

To further bolster the squad, Aryah Shah, Chirag Duhan, and Yuvaan Nandal have been added to the team. Their involvement in the training sessions alongside the main team members is anticipated to be an invaluable experience, offering them a glimpse into the world of professional tennis.

In conclusion, the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Togo on home soil serves as more than just a contest; it's an opportunity for the Indian team to showcase their talent, leverage home advantage, and for the younger players, to gain essential exposure to the international tennis scene.

With preparations in full swing at the DLTA Complex, fans and players alike are set for what promises to be a memorable event in the world of tennis.
