Davydenko clinches World tour finals title

London, Nov 30: The season-ending ATP World Tour Finals which started out to be a key battle between World top two players Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to grab the world number one ranking by year-end wound up with an unusual twist when Russia's Nikolay Davydenko clinched the title.

Davydenko defeated Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-4 in the finals at London's 02 Arena on Sunday, Nov 29 to become the first Russian to win the title in the tournament history.

"If you see like I was watching, till 2008, so many names there, like Djokovic, Federer, everyone, Sampras. In 2009, stay name Davydenko for, like, forever, for this trophy. I think it's amazing," said Davydenko.

The tournament which started in 1970 has mostly seen the world's leading players lift the trophy.

But, with this win, the 28-year-old World No 7 follows in the footsteps of Spain's Alex Corretja and Argentina's David Nalbandian, who were the only ones in the past to have won the world tour title without having any other major title to their name.
