Sabalenka Eyes Cincinnati Success Post Swiatek Victory, Preps For US Open

Aryna Sabalenka moves past her semi-final victory over Iga Swiatek at the Cincinnati Open, eyeing the title in her final US Open preparation. Despite previous losses to Swiatek, Sabalenka's recent win boosts her confidence ahead of the major tournament.

Aryna Sabalenka has put her semi-final win over Iga Swiatek at the Cincinnati Open behind her as she aims to conclude her US Open preparations with a title. Sabalenka, who has reached her fifth Tour-level final this year, defeated Swiatek in straight sets to set up a final clash with Jessica Pegula in Ohio. The Belarusian had lost her previous three matches against Swiatek but ended that streak to reach her first Cincinnati Open final on her fourth attempt.

"It was a brilliant performance from me. But I just want to focus on staying in the moment and giving my best tennis every time I'm on the court," Sabalenka said. "I try to stay calm, confident and aggressive on the court. That definitely gave me a lot of confidence, going into the US Open. But that's already in the past; if I focus on this win, it'll stay in the past. I'm really happy with the win."

Sabalenka Targets Cincinnati Win

Sabalenka's victory over Swiatek marked her fourth win against a World No. 1 in WTA-1000 events since the format's introduction in 2009, tying her with Petra Kvitova for the most wins against top-ranked players in such events.

During the match, Sabalenka took a commanding 5-1 lead but saw seven match points saved by Swiatek in the seventh game, with two more squandered shortly after as Swiatek threatened an unlikely comeback. Sabalenka eventually secured victory on her tenth match point.

"I kept telling myself 'she's the world number one, she's going to keep fighting and doing her best,'" Sabalenka said. "You have to stay aggressive. You have to put pressure on her. You have to play your tennis and try. That was my mentality in the tough moments."

Reflecting on that challenging period of the match, Sabalenka noted it was the toughest moment of their encounter. "When I'm in the zone, what thoughts do I have? There are no thoughts. Just about the tennis. About the next ball coming. Just about hitting and trying to make the right decisions," she explained.

Sabalenka's ability to remain focused and composed under pressure has been crucial to her success this season, as she continues to build momentum heading into the US Open.

The Cincinnati Open final against Pegula presents another opportunity for Sabalenka to showcase her skills and further solidify her status as one of the top players on tour this year.

As she prepares for this significant match, Sabalenka remains determined to stay present and deliver her best performance on court.
