Sabalenka Sweeps Past Zheng to Reach Miami Open Quarter-Finals, Matching Justine Henin Record

By Oliver King

Aryna Sabalenka's Miami Open title defence continued to roll on as she comfortably passed Zheng Qinwen in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals in Miami.

Sabalenka, who is aiming to be the first woman to win back-to-back tournaments in Florida since Serena Williams 11 years ago, edged closer to that reality with a 6-3 6-4 victory.

The top seed quickly asserted her dominance and broke her opponent in the second game of the opening set, though she needed three attempts to do so.

Sabalenka got the better of Zheng's serve again, and even though the world number 26 responded, the damage had already been done as the defending champion took the lead.

The second set saw both players trade back-to-back breaks of serve as Zheng pushed to take the encounter the distance, but Sabalenka held firm for the remainder.

Sabalenka was, however, forced to save three break points in the eighth game before sealing her progression to the last eight with a blistering serve that Zheng returned long.

The recently crowned Indian Wells champion will take on home hopeful Hailey Baptiste next, after she stunned French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko earlier on Monday.

In doing so, Baptiste has made her first quarter-final in a WTA-1000 event and has claimed four consecutive wins at WTA level main draws for the first time in her career.

Miami Open: Nine and counting for super Sabalenka

Sabalenka is the first player to win nine consecutive matches without dropping a set in women's singles at the Miami Open since Serena Williams (11) in 2002-03.

She is also the first player to reach the quarter-finals in 15 consecutive WTA-level events appeared in (excluding WTA Finals) since Justine Henin.

Henin managed 25 consecutive last-eight appearances between Charleston 2006 and Miami 2008.
