Sania faulters in singles, through to doubles' quarters

By Staff

New Haven (Connecticut) Aug 23: Sania Mirza failed to progress to the quarter-finals of the Pilot Pen Open here, after she was shown the door in the second round by eight seed Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine.

The 20-year-old Hyderabadi, who became the first Indian woman to enroll herself in the seeds list of any tennis major, could not live up to her expectation, as she battled hard against the 23rd ranked Ukrainian, only to lose the match 3-6, 6-0, 3-6.

By virtue of her recent performances, the 28th ranked Indian is seeded 26th in the last Grand Slam of the season, the US Open.
Bondarenko will now face Hungarian qualifier Agnes Szavay in the quarter-finals of the 600,000 dollar tier II event.

However, in the doubles it was a different scenario as Sania and her new Italian partner Mara Santangelo sailed into the quarter-finals with a facile 6-4, 7-5 win over all American duo of Corina Morariu and Meghann Shaughnessy.

In the last eight, the third seed Indo-Italian duo will be up against wildcard Swiss-Slovak combo of Janette Husarova and Patty Schnyder.
